P2463: Diesel particulate filter restriction – soot accumulation
The diesel particulate filter is clogged with soot.
Updated
What P2463 means
A diesel particulate filter (DPF) catches soot from the exhaust. It cleans itself by burning the soot off, which needs a hot exhaust: on longer drives this happens by itself, and the engine computer can also start a regeneration.
When the filter fills faster than it’s cleaned, the pressure difference across it rises, and the engine computer stores P2463.
Can I keep driving?
Check soon
Probably OK to drive short-term, but have it checked soon. Fuel use or emissions may be worse.
General guidance based on the code alone, not on the car’s actual condition. If in doubt, stop and ask a mechanic.
A filter that keeps clogging gets harder to clean. Many cars limit the power when it’s badly clogged, so have it seen to before that happens.
Symptoms
- A particulate filter warning on the dashboard, on many cars.
- Less power, or limp mode.
- On some cars, a higher idle or the cooling fan running while a regeneration is under way.
Common causes
- Mostly short trips, so the filter never regenerates. Short trips don’t get the exhaust hot enough, and a regeneration that keeps being interrupted never finishes.
- Faulty pressure sensor. A faulty differential pressure sensor, or a cracked or blocked hose to it, can report a clogged filter that isn’t.
- Engine fault causing extra soot. For example an EGR, injector or boost fault. Fix that first, or the filter clogs again.
Typical fixes
- Read the other codes too, and fix any engine fault that makes extra soot.
- If your car’s handbook recommends it for a particulate filter warning, a longer drive at a steady speed can let the filter regenerate.
- Have the differential pressure sensor and its hoses checked.
- Have a forced regeneration done with a tool for your make, or the filter cleaned or replaced. Read My Car can’t start a regeneration.
Questions
Can I drive with P2463?
Probably for a short time, but have it checked soon. If the car is in limp mode or the warning keeps coming back, don’t leave it.
Will a long drive clear P2463?
Sometimes, if the filter isn’t too full and the car can regenerate on the move. Follow your handbook. If the code comes back, have it checked.
