P2101: Throttle actuator control motor circuit range/performance
The engine computer can’t move the electronic throttle the way it wants: the motor’s circuit or current is out of range, or the throttle doesn’t reach the position it commands. It usually limits the power or lets the engine only idle (limp mode).

What P2101 means
On cars with an electronic throttle, the accelerator pedal doesn’t move the throttle directly. The engine computer reads the pedal and opens the throttle with a small electric motor in the throttle body, and position sensors report where the throttle plate really is.
P2101 means the motor’s circuit is out of the range the engine computer expects, or the throttle doesn’t follow it. Because it can’t be sure the throttle does what it’s told, the engine computer usually limits the power or lets the engine only idle (limp mode).
P0638, P2118, P2119, and a throttle stuck open or closed (P2111, P2112)
P0638 and P2119 mean the throttle doesn’t reach the position the engine computer commands, or doesn’t close as it should; P2118 that the motor draws a current out of range. The causes and advice are the same as for P2101.
P2111 and P2112 mean the throttle is stuck further open or further closed than commanded. Then the engine may not respond to the pedal at all, so the app advises stopping: their own driving text is shown below.

P2111: Throttle Actuator Control System — Stuck Open
The electronic throttle stays further open than the engine computer commands: it doesn’t close when it should.
Common causes: dirty or carbon-fouled throttle body, or a sticking throttle plate, faulty throttle body: its motor or built-in position sensor, wiring or connector fault, throttle not re-learned after cleaning or replacement, on some cars.
Driving: Stop when it’s safe to do so, switch the engine off and have it checked before driving on. With the throttle stuck, the engine may not respond to the pedal: it can lose power or stall, or the idle can run high. Most engine computers then limit the engine to a fast idle or cut the power; have the car recovered rather than drive it like that.
P2112: Throttle Actuator Control System — Stuck Closed
The electronic throttle stays further closed than the engine computer commands: it doesn’t open when it should.
Common causes: dirty or carbon-fouled throttle body, or a sticking throttle plate, faulty throttle body: its motor or built-in position sensor, wiring or connector fault, throttle not re-learned after cleaning or replacement, on some cars.

Can I keep driving?
Drive gently
Drive gently and only as far as you need to, and have it checked soon. The engine computer may cut the power (limp mode) or let the engine only idle, sometimes suddenly, so avoid motorways and overtaking until it’s fixed. If the engine stalls, or doesn’t respond to the pedal as it should, stop when it’s safe to do so and have it recovered.
General guidance based on the code alone, not on the car’s actual condition. If in doubt, stop and ask a mechanic.
Limp mode can come on suddenly, for example while overtaking, so avoid motorways and overtaking until it’s fixed. Some engines also idle unevenly or stall when you slow down.
Symptoms
- Limp mode: little power, or the engine won’t rev above a limit.
- Poor or no response to the accelerator pedal.
- An idle that’s too high, uneven or stalls, on some cars.
- The engine won’t start, on some cars.
Common causes
- Dirty or carbon-fouled throttle body, or a sticking throttle plate. Carbon from the crankcase ventilation and EGR builds up around the plate, until the motor can’t move it smoothly.
- Faulty throttle body: its motor or built-in position sensor. The motor and the sensors are usually part of the throttle body, which is then replaced as a unit.
- Wiring or connector fault. Look for a loose plug, corroded pins or chafed wires at the throttle body.
- Throttle not re-learned after cleaning or replacement, on some cars. The engine computer remembers the old throttle’s positions. Many cars need a relearn procedure after work on the throttle body.
How to fix P2101
- Read all fault codes: pedal sensor codes (P2135 to P2139, P0220s) stored with it point to the pedal or the wiring instead.
- Check the throttle body’s plug and wiring for corrosion, water and a firm fit.
- Have the throttle body checked. A faulty one is replaced. A dirty one is sometimes cleaned, but at least one throttle body maker advises against it.
- After cleaning or replacing it, have the throttle relearn done as the service information for your car describes.
- Clear the codes and check that the engine idles and responds normally.
FAQ
Can I drive with P2101 or P2119?
Gently, and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may cut the power or let the engine only idle, sometimes suddenly, so avoid motorways and overtaking. If the engine stalls or doesn’t respond to the pedal as it should, stop when it’s safe to do so and have it recovered. With P2111 or P2112 (throttle stuck), stop and have it checked first.
Will cleaning the throttle body fix it?
Sometimes, when carbon is the cause. Not every throttle body may be cleaned, and many cars need a throttle relearn afterwards, so leave it to a workshop. If the code comes back, the throttle body itself or its wiring is the next suspect.
What is the difference between P2101 and P2135?
P2101 means the throttle’s motor or its control is out of range: the throttle doesn’t move as commanded. P2135 means two position sensors disagree about where it is. Both usually put the engine in limp mode.
