P0500: Vehicle speed sensor malfunction
The engine computer is not getting a valid vehicle speed signal.
Updated
What P0500 means
The engine computer uses the road speed for things like idle control, cruise control and, with an automatic gearbox, the gear changes. It gets the speed from a sensor on the gearbox or, on many newer cars, from the ABS wheel speed sensors through the ABS module.
P0500 means that signal is missing or implausible, for example zero while the car is moving.
Can I keep driving?
Check soon
Probably OK to drive short-term, but have it checked soon. Fuel use or emissions may be worse.
General guidance based on the code alone, not on the car’s actual condition. If in doubt, stop and ask a mechanic.
If the speedometer stops working, you can’t see your speed: drive with extra care until it’s fixed.
Symptoms
- The speedometer reads zero, jumps, or stops working.
- Cruise control doesn’t work.
- Harsh or odd gear changes with an automatic gearbox.
- Where the speed comes from the ABS, an ABS warning as well.
Common causes
- Faulty wheel or gearbox speed sensor. The sensor itself, or dirt or debris on its tip.
- Wiring fault. A damaged wire or a corroded connector between the sensor and the module that reads it.
- ABS module fault. Where the speed comes from the ABS. Read My Car can’t read the ABS module: that needs a tool for your make.
Typical fixes
- With a passenger watching, compare the vehicle speed in Read My Car’s live data with the speedometer.
- Check the speed sensor’s plug and wiring for damage and corrosion.
- If the ABS warning is on too, have the ABS module read with a tool for your make.
- Replace the sensor if the wiring is fine and it gives no signal.
Questions
Can I drive with P0500?
Probably for a short time, but have it checked soon. Without a working speedometer, take extra care with your speed.
Why is the ABS light on as well?
On many newer cars the road speed comes from the ABS wheel speed sensors. A faulty wheel sensor then affects both systems. Read My Car can’t read ABS codes: that needs a tool for your make.
