Read OBD2 fault codes on an iPhone

Safari on iPhone and iPad can’t use Bluetooth. Open Read My Car in the free Bluefy browser and connect a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter.

Updated

Why not Safari

Read My Car talks to the adapter through Web Bluetooth, a browser feature that Safari doesn’t have. Bluefy is a browser for iPhone and iPad that does.

How to do it

  1. Install the free Bluefy browser from the App Store.
  2. Plug a Bluetooth Low Energy OBD2 adapter into the diagnostic socket under the dashboard.
  3. Switch the ignition on. The engine can stay off.
  4. Open readmycar.com in Bluefy and choose “Connect Bluetooth adapter”.
  5. Pick your adapter from the list, and read the fault codes.

Which adapter

Only Bluetooth Low Energy adapters work on iPhone and iPad: Vgate iCar Pro BLE, vLinker MC+ (Bluetooth 4.0/BLE version), OBDLink CX, Veepeak BLE and similar BLE adapters. USB cables and older “Bluetooth 2.0” adapters don’t.

Privacy

Read My Car keeps fault codes, live data and the VIN in your browser and sends them nowhere. Bluefy is a separate app with its own privacy policy.

Questions

Can I use Chrome on my iPhone?

No. At the time of writing, browsers on iPhone and iPad, Chrome included, don’t offer Web Bluetooth. Bluefy does.

Can I try it without an adapter?

Yes. The app has demo cars with real fault codes you can read and clear, in any browser.

Check your own car

Read My Car reads and explains fault codes with an ELM327 OBD2 adapter, right in Chrome or Edge, or Bluefy on iPhone. Free, no account, and your car’s data stays on your device.
